Artists: Jayne Deely (playwright), Jenny McKnight (director)
Description:
Jayne Deely’s Waycross is an audio play that premiered at Indiana University’s virtual At First Sight Festival in 2020. Directed by IU faculty member Jenny McKnight, Waycross follows the journey of a globe-trotting CIA covert operative assigned to infiltrate a community theatre in Georgia, posing as a dramaturg.
Says Deely of her play: “Waycross is my version of a pandemic play, not one that chronicles the constant loss and disconnection and confusion of the past year, but one that offers something I was craving, and thought others might be too. Community. Connection. Laughter. Escape. Being in rooms with people doing weird theatre exercises; with people doing anything at all, really. As the world opens back up, I hope we remember that we all need five seconds sometimes, and that we give it to ourselves, and to others.”
