                            JUDITH WALCUTT WINS
NORMAN CORWIN AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN AUDIO THEATRE

May 3, 2016

Producer, director, writer, occasional actress, and CEO of Otherworld Media, Judith Walcutt has been named the winner of the 2016 Norman Corwin Award for Excellence in Audio Theatre.

Raised in Millburn, New Jersey, and earning a Bachelor's degree at Bard College and a Master of Arts from the University of Southern California, Judith has been producing world-class audio theatre for almost forty years. Working as an independent producer, she founded Otherworld Media in 1981, creating "Radio Movies" for WGBH in Boston, and many later productions for national networks, recordings, and internet distribution. These include superb adaptations of Tom Lewis' "Empire Of  The Air" (considered superior to even Ken Burns' video of the bestseller), Ursula K. LeGuin's "The Phoenix," Gish Jen's "The Water Faucet Vision," Raymond Chandler's "Goldfish," the 50th Anniversary broadcast of "The War Of The Worlds," and Stephen Crane's "The Red Badge of Courage."

Judith is married to David Ossman, of the acclaimed Firesign Theatre comedy troupe, and they have two sons, Orson, a film director, and Preston, a musician.

This year's Award is particularly appropriate, because in 1991, working with WETA, Judith produced the new version of Norman Corwin's classic radio salute to the American Bill Of Rights, "We Hold These Truths." Written by Corwin, the new production was directed by Ossman, and broadcast over every radio network in the U. S., both public and commercial, as well as the BBC and the CBC. This program brought Corwin back to radio, and paved the way for new generations of listeners to be exposed to his genius.

Deeply respecting her work, Norman Corwin appeared as an actor in two of Judith's productions, "Empire of the Air," and "The Wizard of Oz," adapted by David Ossman for the 100th anniversary of the beloved story.

Judith's productions have featured a host of the finest acting talents available, including many who are world-famous for their work on stage and screen.

From their island home near Seattle, Judith and David continue to write, plan new productions, teach children the skills and joys of audio theatre, and have established the Mark Time Awards to recognize the best audio theatre works and workers each year. Their household now becomes the only one to display two Norman Corwin Awards, as David was honored in 2012 with his compatriots in The Firesign Theatre.

The Norman Corwin Award for Excellence in Audio Theatre, given annually by The National Audio Thatre Festivals (NATF), is the premier American recognition of lifetime achievement, regardless of media, in the field of audio theatre. It was instituted May 3, 2010, on Norman Corwin's 100th birthday. The first Award was given to Mr. Corwin himself, who is considered the Grand Master of American radio theatre.

The Corwin Award is announced each year on May 3rd by NATF and presented annually  at HEAR Now's Closing Ceremonies, in Kansas City, this year scheduled for Sunday, June 12th, at the Holiday Inn Country Club Plaza Ballroom.
